Capital Campaign Committee
March & April 2024
Presentation: Sunday, April 21, 2024 at 11:30am
We are looking for members to serve on a Capital Campaign Committee. This committee will review "capital improvement projects" suggestions within the church, help provide the Consistory with recommendations and guidance for which projects to prioritize, and make a recommendation to the congregation for the congregation's final vote of approval of projects. Current suggestions include: addressing the repair needs of the bell tower, replacing a non-functioning heat pump in our HVAC system, a digital marque, etc.
This committee will provide leadership for utilizing capital campaign resources to determine financially how much our congregation can provide in additional support for a capital campaign, research grant options, investigate business sponorship, and look at other sources of potential financial support. This committee will also provide leadership for how funds will be raised for this campaign. It is anticipated this will involve a multi-year pledged capital campaign fund drive.
For more information and/or to express an interest in serving on this committee, please see Pastor Ben, Pastor Mary Etta, George McLain (Consistory Pres), Kirk Aulenbach (Consistory VP), or Cory Putt (Head Deacon).

Holy Humor Sunday
2nd Sunday of Easter
Sunday, April 7, 2023 at 10:15am
Hybrid: Live Stream, Phone Stream, Facebook Live & In-Person
Each year we pick a different fun theme for Holy Humor Sunday. This year our theme is the "Beach". How does this year's "Beach" theme relate to Christianity and the Easter message? Join us to find out.
During this worship service there will be pauses for children's hands-on activities, humorous interuptions, special decorations, and more.
You are invited to come dressed for the theme in "beach wear" (please do NOT come in "swim wear"), or just come in casual or bright colored clothing (Holy Humor Sunday is also known as "Bright Sunday"). Dressing for the theme might mean: t-shirt or sweatshirt from your favorite beach, Hawaiian shirt, etc.
To watch on the live stream click on this Holy Humor Sunday Live Stream link; to download this Sunday's bulletin go to This Sunday's Bulletin link.
What is Holy Humor Sunday?
Holy Humor Sunday is an opportunity to let our hair down - way down - with a very upbeat and fun service, following the somber season of Lent. It is a day of humor and light-hearted fun.
Holy Humor Sunday shares its roots with that of April Fool’s Day. When Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday, he defeated death, and in doing so the Great Deceiver (i.e. the Devil) was deceived - bested by the best trick ever. From deceiving the Great Deceiver on Easter, April Fool’s Day came to be celebrated on April 1st, and Holy Humor Sunday came to be most commonly celebrated on the Sunday following Easter Sunday.
This ancient Easter custom was begun by the Greeks in the early centuries of Christianity. For centuries Holy Humor Sunday has been celebrated by Eastern Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant countries going by a variety of names, including "Bright Sunday" (the Sunday after Easter) and “days of joy and laughter” with parties and picnics the week after Easter to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection. Churchgoers and pastors played practical jokes on each other, drenched each other with water, told jokes, sang, and danced.
The custom was written about by early church theologians, including Augustine, Gregory of Nyssa, and John Chrysostom. These theologians called it “Risus paschalis - the Easter laugh,” referring to God playing a practical joke on the devil by raising Jesus from the dead.
The custom began to fade by the mid 1900s in many churches. In 1988 the Fellowship of Merry Christians, which bi-monthly publishes The Joyful Noiseletter, began to encourage churches to resurrect “Bright Sunday” celebrations and to call it “Holy Humor Sunday.” The first theme they encouraged was: “Jesus is the LIFE of the party.” The Fellowship of Merry Christians encourages churches in general to uplift the joy and humor found in scripture and in our Christian faith. You can learn more on their website at: https://www.joyfulnoiseletter.com/hhsunday.asp
We have been celebrating Holy Humor Sunday annually since 2014. Previous themes and pictures from those worship services can be found on the “Photos” page of our website.
The Worship Committee begins considering themes each January for the next Holy Humor Sunday, and we welcome individuals to share ideas. For the past few years our youth group or confirmation class came up with and developed the theme

Maundy Thursday
Thursday, March 28, 2024 at 6:30pm
On Maundy Thursday Jesus gathered with the disciples for the Feast of Passover. They shared in a meal. He took bread, blessed it and broke it, and instituted the Lord’s Supper (Holy Communion). He then took his disciples to a garden to pray, where he was betrayed and crucified.
On Thursday, March 28 at 6:30pm, we will begin worship in the Fellowship Hall at table with one another. We will have a free light meal and communion. Then we will process to the sanctuary for Tenebrae - the service of shadows - where we will pray, hear the last words of Christ, and strip the altar in preparation of his crucifixion, as the sanctuary slowly becomes shrouded in darkness.
We hope you will join us for this meaningfully spiritual service.
The meal is provided by the church; there is no charge for the meal, and there is no need to bring any food along with you. As always, visitors, friends, and members are all equally welcome.
Please note, with having Tenebrae included in our Maundy Thursday worship service, we will not be having a separate Good Friday worship service; however, there is a Good Friday Prayer Vigil taking place, more details are listed below.
Due to the logistics of starting in the fellowship hall and moving to the sanctuary, the downstairs portion of this worship service will be in-person only. However, we plan to live stream the upstairs Tenebrae portion of our worship service, which you can view by clicking on this Tenebrae Live Stream link.

St. Daniel's ELCA in Robesonia will be hosting our second Conrad Weiser Ministerium Wednesday community afternoon Lenten Service. The worship service begins at 12:00noon, followed by a free light luncheon beginning at about 12:30pm.
Lent is a season where we increase our spiritual disciplines to strengthen us in faith and in relationship with our Lord God, as Jesus strengthened himself in faith in the 40 days in the wilderness. One of the ways in which we strengthen our faith (as well as strengthen our fellowship with our fellow Christians within our school district) is through this additional mid-week worship service during this season of Lent.

Your support helps keep the cost of tuition lower to enable education to be more accessible for more people, which enables our churches to have more skilled and educated leadership.

Ash Wednesday
Wednesday, February 14, 2024 at 6:30pm
Hybrid: Live Stream, Phone Stream, Facebook Live, & In-person
Ash Wednesday begins the holy season of the 40 days of Lent. On this day, we humbly admit that despite our words and best intentions we haven fallen short of our vows, statements of faith, and public expressions of discipleship. We come admitting that we are in need of a savior to wash away our sins.
Click on this "Why Ashes on Ash Wednesday" link to learn more about the use of ashes on Ash Wednesday.
We will be offering the Imposition of Ashes. Worshipers are welcome to come foward and receive ashes on the foreheads or on the back of their hand, or you may just remain seated in your pew if you prefer not to receive ashes.
This Wednesday we will be sharing in the celebration of Holy Communion. For those worshiping from at home, you are invited to have your own bread and wine or grape juice for the pastors to bless during the live stream service.
During the next 40 days, it is customary to increase our spiritual disciplines. This could be through: participating in an additional weekly worship service; adding more prayer time to our week; adding an additional Bible study to our week; giving of alms (additional offering) to help a particular cause for people in need; fasting (in particular when the money that would have been used to purchase that food is used to help the poor); or serving (adding an additional way that you help the less fortunate or those in need).
To participate virtually, click on this Ash Wednesday Live Stream link. To view or download the bulletin by click on this worship bulletin link.

Soup-er Bowl Sunday
Sunday, February 11, 2024 at 11:30am
One of Our Favorite Times of the Year! February 11th is SOUPerbowl Sunday! Immediately following worship, we will be having a soup luncheon in Miller Fellowship Hall. EVERYONE is invited! Please make your favorite crockpot meal (soup, chili or whatever) and bring it in to church. Make sure it is labeled with your name and kind of soup or creation, and place it in the kitchen area. It will be plugged in and stay warm during the worship service. After worship we will gather to enjoy the varietyof crockpot delicacies. Large bowls and small bowls will be available so that you may sample as many or as few items as you wish. Our best year was when we had 19 crockpots of soup/chili. Let's try to beat that this year! If you don't have a crockpot or you're not much of a cook, you may instead bring in crackers or bread or a dessert. You will have plenty of time to enjoy this meal and still see the real Super Bowl! Game time is set for 6:30pm ET. So no excuses. Please plan to attend. The food is always good and the fellowship is GREAT! Please sign the sign-up sheet in the vestibule or call the church office so that we may better plan this event.
Transfiguration Sunday
The Last Sunday after Epiphany
Sunday, February 11, 2024 at 10:15am
Hybrid: Live Stream, Phone Stream, Facebook Live, & In-person
On this Sunday we celebrate the Transfiguration of Christ, when Jesus took Peter, James, and John up the mountain to pray. While on the mountain, Jesus was changed (transfigured) into dazzling white, and the voice of the Lord spoke to the apostles. This Sunday is the last Sunday before the season of Lent, and we are mindful that the season of Lent leads to the cross, where the blood of Christ washes us clean, so that we might stand before the Lord in dazzling white when it is our turn for that last journey up the mountain.
Epiphany is the season of celebrating the light of Christ coming to all the people, not just to a certain chosen. The season of Epiphany reminds us of our role to take the love and the word of God out into the world to all people; this is a season of "mission" and growth through our outreach, symbolized by the green paraments (altar cloth coverings) used through most of this season. However, on Transfiguration Sunday we use white, symbolizing the transfiguration of Christ into dazzling white, and his welcome into his kingdom with him through our allowing him to transform us.
To participate virtually, click on this Transfiguration Sunday Live Stream link. To view or download the bulletin by click on this worship bulletin link.

Youth Communion Classes
Sunday, January 28, 2024 at 9:00am
Snow Date: Sunday, February 4, 2024
All children of our church who have not completed the confirmation program are expected to take this communion class prior to participating in communion, and are to take a refresher class every other year until confirmed.
Pastor Ben Motz is offering classes for children, teens, and young adults who have not yet been confirmed, but who would like to participate in the sacrament of Holy Communion. The classes give the opportunity for youth to have an understanding and greater reverence for the sacrament before participating.
If you are unsure whether participating in communion is right for your child at this time, please note that youth do not need to commune after taking the class. You can come to the class, learn more, and then decide afterwards. However, if you do wish to commune, unconfirmed youth need to participate in the communion class or complete the confirmation program, so that they have a more complete understanding of what this Sacrament is about.
If you would like to participate in the class, but are unable to attend on January 28, please contact the church office or Pastor, as with enough interest, the Pastor will hold another Youth & Communion Class on the following Sunday, Feburary 4 at 9:00am.
For more details about children and communion, you can pick up a copy of our church’s “Children & Communion” booklet from the church office. For more information, please contact the Pastor at 610-621-5770PastorMotz@sprucc.org.

I Don't Know What You're Talking About
Communications Workshop
Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at 6:30pm
Bettering communication is an ongoing effort that is needed within any organization. Once a year we review our guidelines and processes for helping to ensure that we have solid communication within our church. With the change of the newsletter format, the expected new website, and bringing together parts from our merger, there will be new information to hear at this workshop.
This workshop is open to all members to attend. Everyone who is in an elected leadership position, who did not attend the 2023 workshop should attend this workshop.
On Tuesday, January 23 from 6:30-7:15pm Pastor Ben is offering a Communications Workshop. This workshop is designed to: (1) help make sure we are geting info on the website, newsletter, bulletin, E-Newsletter, and other means of communication; (2) help provide you with guidance to help make sure your articles are providing the congregation with the information they need to know what you are talking about and what your activity is all about; (3) go over the format needed to submit articles to the office secretary; and (4) to make sure your articles, posters, and flyers fit the necessary guidelines to be used within the United Church of Christ of Robesonia.
This workshop is for any person who wishes to submit an article for the newsletter, bulletin, website, or hang a flyer in the church building. All elected leaders, as well as anyone who might be interested in communicating within the church through the newsletter, bulletin, flyers, posters, website, facebook, or E-News should attend this workshop.
This workshop is free. No advance registration is needed. However, we encourage you to sign up in advance, so that we can email you the materials in advance. To sign up, please contact the church office at 610-621-5770 or office@sprucc.org
Pastor Ben offers this workshop annually in January. If you would like/need to attend this workshop, but are not available this day/time, please contact Pastor Ben to try to schedule a make up day.
For more information, please contact Pastor Ben Motz at 610-621-5770 or PastorMotz@sprucc.org.
As a reminder, it is the policy of the United Church of Christ of Robesonia that no committee or individual should hang or set out flyers/posters about an event or activity before submitting a complete article to the office secretary about the event, following the guidelines discussed in this workshop.

Reclaiming the Great Commission
Our Church's Philosophy of How We Do Ministry
Tuesday, January 16, 2024 from 6:30-8:30pm
As part of our overall ministry and growth plan, we have adopted the Missional Approach as our church's philosophy of ministry. This philosophy not only guides us in evangelism and church growth, but in all areas of ministry. The Missional Approach is all about reclaiming the Great Commission and living out the Great Commandment.
Pastor Ben will be offering a workshop on the Missional Approach on Tuesday, January 16 from 6:30-8:30pm. This free workshop is open to members and visitors alike. Preregistration is strongly encouraged, so that we can prepare sufficient materials in advance. To register, please contact the church office at Office@sprucc.org or 610-621-5770 by Sunday, January 14 (if you register later than January 14, we may or may not have enough handouts printed for you, but still let us know that you are coming ahead of time anyway).
All elected leadership are to attend this training at least every other year. If you are a leader who cannot attend on this date, please be in contact with Pastor Ben at 610-621-5770 or PastorMotz@sprucc.org to see if an additional date might be possible.
In addition, this year other churches in the area have expressed an interest and have requested to particpate in this year's workshop, so we hope to have additional fellow disciples with us.

Donations
For donations to be counted for the 2023 contribution year, they need to: (a) be received by the counting team by worship on Sunday, January 14; and (b) be dated for 2023. As of January 1, all other contributions will be attributed to the 2024 giving year.
For additional information about donations, please contact the Financial Secretary, Geneva Aulenbach at the church office or at treasurer@sprucc.org.
Expenses
All bills and reimbursement requests: (a) must be submitted to the Treasurer, Terry Pastor, by the end of worship on Sunday, January 14, 2024; and (b) be dated for 2023. As of January 1, all other expenditures will be attributed to the 2024 fiscal/budget/calendar year.

Worship Committee
Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at 3:30pm
The Worship Committee oversees our music ministry; choirs; decorating of the sanctuary; organizing greeters, readers, ushers/greeters, children's message, and acolytes; the live streaming service; bulletins; altar flowers; and special worship services. If that sounds of interest to you, we hope you will consider joining the Worship Committee. Without shared lay leadership, we cannot have the beautiful and meaningful in-person and virtual worship services we enjoy each week.
For more information, contact any member of our Worship Committee, including: Larry Hollahan (chair); Terry Pastor (vice chair); and Diane McAllister. If you would like to participate on the committee, but this day/time does not work in your schedule, please contact us, as we seek to adjust our meeting schedule when possible to meet a variety of scheduling needs.
