George H. Merkel, Jr.
February 26, 1938 -- January 23, 2017
Born in Womelsdorf, George was a son of the late George H. and Mary (Moyer) Merkel, Sr.
George retired from the Wernersville State Hospital. He started as an orderly, then continued as a vector control specialist, and retired in 1990 after 33 ½ years as the Mechanic in the Carpool. He also served on the fire rescue for several years.
He was a local tinsmith, and a Ford Hot Rod-der by heart. He was always fixing old hot rods and was one of the first members of the South Mountain Rod & Custom.
He is survived by two sons, George H. Merkel, III, husband of Alice M., Robesonia, and Jeffrey S. Merkel, Newmanstown; a daughter, Donna J., wife of Gerald E. Folk, Robesonia; two brothers, Ronald Merkel, husband of Carol, Mt. Aetna, and Paul Merkel, Newmanstown; three sisters, Patsy wife of Robert Dries, Robesonia, Peggy, wife of Warren Miller, Newmanstown, and Penny, wife of Rick Behney, Manheim; three grandchildren; and two great grandchildren: Michael "Simon" Merkel and Jackson Merkel.
Services will be held at 11:00AM, Saturday, January 28, 2017, at Lamm & Witman Funeral Home, 243 West Penn Avenue, Wernersville with George's nephew the Rev. Matthew Behney officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00AM, Saturday. Burial will be in Heidelberg Cemetery.
